Hornby Castle

To be privately owned

In Hornby, Lancashire, England, stands Hornby Castle, a castle complex. Originally built in the 13th century, this fortress has evolved into an inhabited estate that retains its character to this day.

History+

The origins of Hornby Castle date back to the 13th century, when the Neville family had the castle built as a replacement for Castle Stede, located to the north. Positioned above the River Wenning, which flows into the River Lune nearby, it assumed a similar role to its predecessor. Foundations of the tower at the rear of the building from this early construction phase are still preserved. In the 16th century, the visible polygonal tower was erected on these old foundations, presumably under Edward Stanley. Around 1720, alterations took place, followed by further renovations and changes in the 19th and 20th centuries.
