Hubertushof Manor

Hubertushof is located in Merzenhausen, a district of Jülich in the Düren district of North Rhine-Westphalia. The complex has been a protected monument since June 18, 1984.

The former moated castle was the seat of the noble family of Merzenhausen, but the knightly lineage died out around the year 1400. The Lords of Streithagen became the new owners. This family died out 300 years later. Elisabeth von Streithagen, mother of Jan von Werth, lived in the castle. After changes of ownership through inheritance, the complex fell into disrepair. The present Hubertushof was built on its remains in the middle of the 17th century.

In 1805, Johann Joseph Gottfried Opfergelt (1770-1842) acquired the estate. His ancestors had already managed Hubertushof as tenants for a long time. The estate remained in direct family ownership until Barthel Opfergelt died without descendants in 1913. His godchild and nephew Barthel Weitz inherited the property.

The right-angled brick complex is in the Renaissance style. It has a two-story residential building facing the street with rectangular windows and two curved gables. The estate was significantly damaged in World War II but was later rebuilt. The property is still owned by the Weitz family.
