Huis Doorn (Castle)

The origins of Huis Doorn date back to 838, when it was first mentioned as a manor. In the 13th century, a small moated castle was built on this site, which was expanded and rebuilt in the following centuries, particularly in the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle acquired its current architectural form in the 18th century. After his abdication and the end of World War I, Wilhelm II acquired the property in 1919 from Baroness Heemstra de Beaufort and had it prepared for himself and his family by 1920. He spent the last 21 years of his life in exile in Doorn and, after his death in 1941, was buried in a specially constructed mausoleum in the castle park. After World War II, the property passed into the possession of the Dutch state.

Huis Doorn Castle is located in Doorn, a district of the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug in the province of Utrecht, in the western Netherlands. It lies at an elevation of approximately 10 meters above sea level.

Today, Huis Doorn is a museum open to visitors. It showcases artworks from the House of Hohenzollern and documents the life of the former emperor and his family in exile. The interior of the castle is largely preserved in the condition it was in at the time of Wilhelm II's death, offering an authentic glimpse into that era. The extensive castle park, including the mausoleum, is also accessible to the public.
