Humboldtsches Castle

The simple Humboldt Castle was built in 1600 on a predecessor building. The estate was owned by the wealthy Barons von Dacheröden and was managed by a tenant, Kleemann. In 1791, Wilhelm von Humboldt married Caroline von Dacheröden, daughter of the Erfurt city captain, and lived with her until March 1793, completely secluded in this manor house in Auleben, in a kind of self-imposed exile. For the young family, who had grown up in the cities of Berlin and Erfurt, country life was a strong contrast, and Caroline, in particular, found it difficult to fit into the staid society of the rural nobility.

On November 19, 1993, the "Förderverein Europadorf Auleben" (Friends of the European Village Auleben) was founded in Humboldt Castle. The preparation of the 1175th-anniversary celebration was a first highlight for the association, which now strives for art and culture, landscape and monument protection in the region.
