Inchmahome Priory

Inchmahome Priory

The remains of the Priory can be visited

On an island in the middle of Lake of Menteith in Scotland is Inchmahome Priory, a monastic ruin. This historic structure was once an Augustinian abbey.

History+

Inchmahome Priory was founded in 1238 by Walter Comyn, then Earl of Menteith. He endowed the monastery for a community of Augustinian canons. The priory hosted numerous personalities. King Robert the Bruce sought refuge here in 1306, 1308, and 1310, followed by King Robert II in 1358. A notable episode was the refuge of the four-year-old Queen Mary Stuart in 1547, after the Scottish army suffered a defeat in the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh.
