Innsbruck Cathedral

The first documented mention of a St. James's Church in Innsbruck dates to 1270, although it is presumed that a church existed on this site as early as 1181. Albrecht Dürer captured the Gothic church in a watercolor in 1494. In 1643, St. James's was elevated to an independent parish. An earthquake in 1689 caused damage, leading to a new Baroque-style construction between 1717 and 1724, based on plans by Johann Jakob Herkomer and Johann Georg Fischer. The famous miraculous image of Mary Help of Christians by Lucas Cranach the Elder, which has been in the church since 1650, transformed it into a Marian pilgrimage site. In 1964, the parish church was elevated to a cathedral with the establishment of the Diocese of Innsbruck. In 2000, a Sacrament Chapel was installed in the south tower, and the 350th anniversary of the transfer of the miraculous image was celebrated.
