Friedrichsthal Hunting Lodge, a former hunting residence of the Mecklenburg Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I, is located in Friedrichsthal, a district of Schwerin today. This historic castle, a protected monument, is an example of late 18th-century architecture and now offers a mix of residential and tourist amenities.

History+

The origins of Friedrichsthal Hunting Lodge date back to 1790, when government councillor August Georg von Brandenstein had a summer house built on a property west of Hellkrug. After several changes of ownership, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I acquired the estate in 1797. Given the game-rich surroundings, he had it converted into a hunting lodge. In 1798, two semicircular side wings were added as a coach house and stable. Later, two cavalier houses for the master of the hunt and the pack, as well as additional stables, were added. Around 1805, the main building was extended by one floor according to plans by Johann Chornelius Barca.
