Pfullingen Hunting Castle

Pfullingen Hunting Lodge, also known as Rempenburg and Lower Castle, is a hunting lodge built on the site of a former moated castle, located on the Echaz river in Pfullingen (Schlossstraße) in the district of Reutlingen (Baden-Württemberg).

The moated castle, presumably built before 1260, was the seat of the Remp von Pfullingen family, first mentioned in 1260. Their last descendant sold the castle to the Dukes of Württemberg in 1487.

Duke Christoph had a hunting lodge built in its place between 1560 and 1565. The master builder and architect Aberlin Tretsch († 1577) supervised the conversion of the moated castle, which cost 1675 Gulden. Today, only the south wing of the four-winged ensemble, assembled into a square in Renaissance style with two tall intermediate buildings, remains. The Dukes of Württemberg frequently used the castle as a hunting and residential lodge in the following centuries. Due to diverse uses, such as a sanatorium and nursing home from 1845 to 1920 and other purposes, the interior of the castle has changed significantly up to the present day. The preserved castle bridge presumably dates from 1563.

Today, the castle houses the Schloss-Schule Pfullingen with a Werkrealschule (Schlossstraße 24).
