Prillwitz Castle

The history of the estate begins in 1795 when Duke Carl of Mecklenburg-Strelitz acquired the Prillwitz estate, which already featured a manor house from 1706. Around 1890, Grand Duke Friedrich Wilhelm (II.) had the current hunting lodge built for his son, the later Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich V. The plans for this construction came from building councilor Eugen Müschen. A special feature of the interior were the “grottos,” walls decorated with embedded oyster and snail shells. After the death of the last Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich VI. in 1918, the castle became the property of his mother, Grand Duchess Elisabeth.
