Prillwitz Castle

Prillwitz Hunting Lodge is a former grand ducal castle in Prillwitz, in the municipality of Hohenzieritz in the Mecklenburg Lake District, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The hunting lodge is located on the banks of the Lieps and is therefore also known as the Liepser Schlösschen.

In 1795, Duke Carl of Mecklenburg-Strelitz bought the Prillwitz estate from the von Bredow family. The manor house, which already existed in 1706, still stands today. In 1882, Hereditary Grand Duke (later Grand Duke) Adolf Friedrich V took over the management of the estate. His father, Grand Duke Friedrich Wilhelm (II), built the hunting lodge for him next to the old manor house around 1890. The plans for this building, in the style of a suburban villa, came from building councilor Eugen Müschen. Part of the interior walls of the building was decorated with embedded oyster shells and snail shells and referred to as a "grotto".

After the suicide of the last and unmarried Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Adolf Friedrich VI, on February 23, 1918, the castle came into the possession of his mother, Grand Duchess Elisabeth.

In 1945, the castle was plundered and later inhabited by refugees and new settlers. Despite the post-war turmoil, the wooden paneling of the entrance hall, the staircase, and the hall (the later restaurant) largely remained intact.

In 1955, the Neubrandenburg energy combine took over the castle and established a holiday property there. During this time, the appearance of the building was adapted to the prevailing taste of the era. This included three flagpoles for the flags of the Soviet Union, the GDR, and the energy combine. The use of the building as a public restaurant and recreation home prevented an otherwise impending decay.

Since 1995, the house has presented itself as a hotel with an attached restaurant. At the end of 2006, the owner changed, and in winter 2007/spring 2008, a stylish renovation of the house and the restoration of the park took place. The reopening after further renovation measures took place on April 4, 2009.
