In the Scottish town of Jedburgh, Jedburgh Castle stands on a hill. Originally built as an earthwork motte, its location near the Scottish-English border made it a central player in the conflicts between the two kingdoms.

King David I of Scotland originally had the castle built as an earthwork motte. In 1174, Jedburgh Castle was among the five castles that had to be ceded to England. Although it temporarily returned to Scottish possession and even served as a royal residence, it repeatedly fell back into English hands.
