Jesuitenkolleg Amberg

The Jesuit College in Amberg, a significant former monastery, shapes the cityscape of the Bavarian town. This listed building complex, whose origins date back to 1665, bears witness to a rich history and the deep roots of the Jesuit order in the region.
History+
The arrival of the Jesuits in Amberg in 1621 marked the beginning of their presence in the re-Catholicized Upper Palatinate. After being assigned the rectory of St. George in 1624, they founded a gymnasium in 1626, initially housed in the former Franciscan monastery. After several relocations, the gymnasium was established next to St. George's Church from 1630. From 1632, the curriculum was expanded to include logic and casuistry, paving the way for a lyceum. The official buildings of the Jesuit College were constructed from 1665, with renowned master builders such as Wolfgang Hirschstetter and Georg Hagn involved. Later extensions were carried out by Georg and Wolfgang Dientzenhofer. The college served as a gymnasium and clerical seminary, and from 1722, a lyceum was affiliated, serving for the education of the clergy. The Jesuit College, which attracted hundreds of pupils and students in the 18th century, was managed by the Jesuits until the dissolution of the order in 1773. Subsequently, the property was handed over to the Order of Malta, which used the buildings until secularization in 1806. Thereafter, the complex became state property and housed, among other things, the Erasmus-Gymnasium.
