Jesuitenkolleg Passau

The former Jesuit College in Passau, a prominent building with a long history, is situated in the heart of the Bavarian city. Founded by the Jesuits, it once served as an important educational center and significantly shaped the spiritual landscape of the region. Today, it is a protected architectural monument and bears witness to Passau's architectural and cultural development.
History+
The Jesuit College was founded in 1611, after Prince-Bishop Archduke Leopold of Austria called the Jesuit order to Passau. The castle-like building, which also included an observatory, was constructed in 1613 under the direction of the Alsatian Jesuit Father Johannes Isfording. The college functioned as a gymnasium, diocesan university, and at times also as a clerical seminary. A fire in 1662 caused damage to the building. Until the suppression of the Jesuit order in 1773, the college played a central role in the spiritual education of the Diocese of Passau. In the prince's room on the ground floor, stucco work from the Carlone school can be found. The inner courtyard displays façade painting in the style of the Dutch Early Renaissance, as well as a bust of Prince-Bishop Leopold Wilhelm of Austria.

Today, the historic building houses the Gymnasium Leopoldinum. The adjacent area of the former Theological-Philosophical University is part of the University of Passau and was built in 1913/1914 in place of earlier Jesuit buildings. An opposing Baroque building, which once housed the Jesuit seminary, now accommodates the State Library. Valuable manuscripts are exhibited in the former refectory, including the Vornbach Bible from 1421.
