Jesuitenkollegium Hadamar

The establishment of the Jesuit College dates back to 1629 when Count Johann Ludwig of Nassau-Hadamar converted to Catholicism and promoted the settlement of religious orders. In January 1630, the first Jesuits settled in Hadamar to resume Catholic pastoral care. Due to the approach of a Swedish army, they fled to Koblenz at the end of 1631 but returned by Christmas 1636. From 1639 to 1772, all parish priests in Hadamar were Jesuits.

The Jesuit College is situated in the heart of the small town of Hadamar, which belongs to the Limburg-Weilburg district in Hesse, Germany.

Today, the complex serves various purposes. The former Jesuit church is now the Catholic parish church of St. John of Nepomuk. Furthermore, the complex houses the local public library and several administrative departments of the Diocese of Limburg. The church, a voluminous hall building, is adorned externally with pilasters and a bell tower with a cupola. Inside, a mirrored ceiling with two large paintings and Rococo stucco cartouches dominates the space. The high altar and side altars are likely original furnishings. The Jesuit crypt is located beneath the church. The church became a parish church in 1818 and received a Gothicized west tower and an enlarged choir in Neo-Gothic style in 1898. Extensive renovation work on the church's roof structure took place from 2004 to 2007. Adjoining the church are two three-story wings of the former college, forming a courtyard of honor. A largely preserved Baroque staircase with a ceiling painting can be found inside. The old rectory, south of the three-wing complex, stylistically harmonizes with the college. The Jesuit Aula, a plastered half-timbered building with a high mansard hip roof, was built in 1764 as an extension of the college and later divided into two residential houses.
