Johannes Castle

The origins of the Johannesschlössl likely date back to the 14th century, although its exact builders are debated. The first owner known by name was Georg Tenn around 1565, after which it was also known as Thennschlössl. After several changes of ownership, Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau acquired the property in 1589. He had it expanded and the eponymous St. John's Chapel built. In 1595, the Archbishop exchanged the castle with the Cathedral Chapter, after which it was referred to as Dekanatsschlössl. It served various purposes, including as accommodation for soldiers, invalids, and prisoners, as well as a hospital. After the Napoleonic Wars, it was auctioned off and housed an inn from 1859. In 1892, the Russian Colonel Basilius von Paschkoff purchased the castle and had it restored and expanded. After the October Revolution, many Russian emigrants found refuge here.
