The origins of the Johannisberger Klause date back to around 1130 with the establishment of a women's monastery or hermitage within the Benedictine monastery of Johannisberg. Later, the women's hermitage was relocated to its current site at the foot of Johannisberg, where a farm already existed. Its first documented mention occurred in 1285. Already in 1452, the Klause, by then also referred to as a monastery, was dissolved. The associated farm was subsequently used economically by the monks' monastery on Johannisberg. In 1603, ownership transferred to the Counts of Schönborn, who utilized the buildings as an economic farm and erected a mill on the nearby Elsterbach, which operated until around 1900. To this day, the complex remains in the possession of the House of Schönborn.

Of the once larger monastic complex, today a long, single-story residential building from 1620 with an adjoining outbuilding, the Gothic St. George's Chapel from the 15th century to the east, and two other farm buildings from the 18th century remain. The rubble stone buildings, originally plastered and featuring sandstone window and door frames, are enclosed by a rubble stone wall. The buildings, which have been vacant for years, show significant signs of decay, but funds for the securing and renovation of the roofs and roof structure have been provided in recent years.
