Johanniter-Doppelkommende Jemgum

The Johanniter settlement in Jemgum was founded around 1240, possibly by Johanniters from the Commandery of Steinfurt. Its establishment may be linked to the Fifth Crusade, during which Frisians came to appreciate the order's work and subsequently endowed them with gifts. The commandery was first documented in 1284/85 when the commander of Steinfurt acquired rights to the church of Holtgaste and established an outwork there. The initially small landholdings were gradually expanded, and its location on the Ems River fostered economic growth, with livestock farming serving as the primary source of income. Jemgum evolved into a leading commandery in East Frisia. In 1401, the parish church of Jemgum and its lands were incorporated. Nuns are documented in Jemgum from 1456. In 1496, the monastery was relocated to the Jemgumkloster outwork, three kilometers away. Following the introduction of the Reformation in 1528, the East Frisian Count Enno II appropriated the commandery. During the first Battle of Jemgum, the commandery was plundered by soldiers of the Duke of Geldern, and the remaining members of the order fled to the Commandery of Muhde.

The former monastery was situated in the present-day village of Jemgum, which belongs to the municipality of Leer in Lower Saxony, Germany.

The monastery church likely originated in the 13th century. Another chapel of the monastery in the village was ceded to the Jemgum parish in 1402 and is now part of the Reformed Church. This church was rebuilt after fires in 1930 and 2004 and restored in the Expressionist style of 1930. There were indications of a spatially separate sisters' house for nuns in the immediate vicinity of the monastic complex. An outwork is documented for Holtgaste.
