The Johanniterkommende Ober-Mossau was founded in the first half of the 13th century. For centuries, the Order of St. John shaped the spiritual and secular life at this location. The commandery was under the patronage of the Holy Cross, the Savior, Mary, Peter, and All Saints. In 1542, the monastery was dissolved and secularized during the Reformation, bringing an end to the monastic era in Ober-Mossau.
