Johanniterkommende Rohrdorf

The Johanniterkommende Rohrdorf was founded by the Catholic Order of St. John/Maltese Order at the beginning of the 14th century. The commandry was assigned to the Bailiwick of Upper Germany – Swabia. On April 25, 1311, the present Church of St. John the Baptist was consecrated, making it the oldest surviving component of the ensemble. In 1430, the Old Building, the commandry building, was constructed directly adjacent to the church. In the late 15th century, the church housed four altars, including a high altar dedicated to the Mother of God and John the Baptist. A significant figure of the Mother of God from 1485, donated by Commander Georg Bombast von Hohenheim, is still preserved today. The medieval panels of the high altar are now located in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. Following the introduction of the Reformation, the church was used simultaneously until the 18th century, which led to repeated conflicts. A contract from 1738 between the Order of St. John and the Duchy of Württemberg allowed for the construction of a new Protestant church as an annex to the existing order church. Since the laying of the foundation stone in 1741 and the spatial separation, the eastern part with the choir has been used by the Catholic community, and the western part by the Protestant community. The commandry was dissolved in 1806, and the buildings, with the exception of the church, were privatized in 1811. The Old Building and the chaplaincy building, which now serve as the town hall, underwent extensive renovation between 1987 and 1991.

The Johanniterkommende Rohrdorf is situated in the village of Rohrdorf, part of Calw in the district of Calw, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 414 m above sea level.

Of the original buildings, the Old Commandry (the chaplaincy building), the church, and the Schaffnerei (steward's office) are preserved. The church is used by the Catholic and Protestant congregations, while the Old Commandry and the chaplaincy building serve as the town hall. The complex encloses remnants of the medieval surrounding wall. Foundations of a former tower, which stood until 1741, were uncovered in 1991.
