In Oberschwarzach, in the district of Schweinfurt in Bavaria, stands the Julius Echter Castle, a building that once served as a residence and is now privately owned.

History+

The origins of the castle date back to 1614, when Prince-Bishop Julius Echter of Würzburg commissioned its construction. It was built on the foundations of an older, already dilapidated castle complex. Originally conceived as a summer residence and hunting lodge for the Würzburg bishops, the moated castle suffered looting and considerable damage during the Thirty Years' War. In the late 17th century, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style.
