Oberschwarzach Castle

Oberschwarzach Castle was built in 1614 by the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg, Julius Echter.

The moated castle was originally intended as a summer residence and hunting lodge for the Würzburg bishops. It was built on the site of an older, dilapidated castle.

During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was plundered and severely damaged. It was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the late 17th century.

In the 18th century, the castle was expanded and transformed into a magnificent Baroque palace. The famous court architect Balthasar Neumann was involved in the planning.

With the secularization in 1803, the palace came into state ownership and was subsequently sold to private individuals.

Over the next centuries, the palace changed hands several times and was used for various purposes, including as a factory and a residential building.

In the 20th century, the palace fell into disrepair. Extensive renovation work was carried out in the 1980s and 1990s to restore it to its former glory.

Oberschwarzach Palace is an impressive example of Baroque architecture.

The four-winged complex encloses a rectangular inner courtyard. The facades are richly decorated with stucco and sculptures.

The most striking feature is the central main portal with its imposing staircase and the coat of arms of the Prince-Bishop.

Inside, numerous magnificent rooms have been preserved, including the Knights' Hall, the Prince-Bishop's Apartment, and the Chapel.

The ceilings are adorned with elaborate frescoes and stucco work. Valuable furniture and works of art from various eras complete the interior.

Today, Oberschwarzach Palace houses a museum that provides insights into the history of the palace and the region.

The palace is also a popular venue for concerts, exhibitions, and other cultural events.

The historic rooms can be rented for private celebrations and corporate events.

The palace is surrounded by a spacious Baroque garden, which invites visitors to stroll and relax.

The garden features geometrically arranged flowerbeds, fountains, and sculptures. From the garden, there is a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.
