The Kaiser Wilhelm Monument, a memorial to Emperor Wilhelm I, was erected at the end of the 19th century at the Porta Westfalica. It is now a widely visible landmark.

History+

In 1889, the Prussian Province of Westphalia decided to erect a monument to Emperor Wilhelm I, choosing Porta Westfalica as its location. Construction began in the summer of 1892 based on designs by Berlin architect Bruno Schmitz and sculptor Kaspar von Zumbusch. The costs amounted to approximately one million Goldmarks.
