The Imperial Cathedral in Königslutter am Elm is a Romanesque monastic building, founded by Emperor Lothair III in 1135. As a former Benedictine abbey church and burial site for the emperor and his family, it ranks among Germany's Romanesque cultural monuments and was the first large vaulted structure north of the Harz mountains.
History+
The foundation of the Imperial Cathedral took place in 1135 by Emperor Lothair III, who endowed the church as a Benedictine monastery and his future burial place. Just two years later, in 1137, Lothair died on his return journey from an Italian campaign and was interred in the still unfinished church. The completion of the structure, which reaches a length of 75 meters and a height of 18 meters, occurred around 1170 under Henry the Lion. In the late Middle Ages, the cathedral developed into a pilgrimage site, especially on the feast day of the church patrons Peter and Paul.
