Imperial Cathedral St. Bartholomäus (Frankfurt)

The origins of the current cathedral date back to the 7th century, with the present structure largely built between 1250 and 1514. A unique feature was the temporary dome of the west tower, which shaped the cityscape for centuries before the tower was completed in the 19th century according to medieval plans. The cathedral was never a bishop's church but gained its significance through its political role in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. From 1562, it served as the coronation church for ten Roman-German emperors. The Salvatorstift, later Bartholomäusstift, was the lord of the cathedral for almost a millennium, founded in 852 by King Louis the German. It was dissolved in 1803, and the cathedral became the property of the city, which has since made it available to the Catholic community for use as a parish church.

The Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew is located in Frankfurt am Main, in the state of Hesse, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 114 m above sea level.

Today, the cathedral is accessible to visitors and can be toured. It continues to serve as a parish church for the Catholic community.
