The castle ruin of Kajaanin linna, once a significant structure, rises on an island in the Kajaani River in the city of the same name. Built in the 17th century, it served as a versatile center for administration, military, and as a prison, before meeting a dramatic end.

History+

Construction of Kajaanin linna castle began in 1604 and was completed in 1619. A second construction phase took place between 1650 and 1666 under the patronage of Count Peter Brahe. Throughout its history, the castle also housed prominent prisoners, including the historian Johannes Messenius, who was imprisoned here from 1616 to 1635. During the Great Northern War, the fortress was besieged by Russian troops. After months of resistance, the garrison had to surrender due to a lack of supplies and ammunition. The Russian conquerors subsequently blew up the castle and deported its inhabitants.
