Kajaani linna (Castle)
On an island in the Kajaani River in the city of the same name, the castle ruin of Kajaanin linna rises. Built in the 17th century, it served as a center for administration, military, and as a prison.
History+
Construction of Kajaanin linna castle began in 1604 and was completed in 1619. A second construction phase took place between 1650 and 1666 under Count Peter Brahe. The castle also housed prisoners, including the historian Johannes Messenius, who was imprisoned here from 1616 to 1635. During the Great Northern War, the fortress was besieged by Russian troops. After months of resistance, the garrison had to surrender due to a lack of supplies and ammunition. The Russian conquerors subsequently blew up the castle and deported its inhabitants.
