Canoness convent (active)
Kanonissenstift Bassum, später Benediktinerinnen

The Canonesses' Collegiate Church of Bassum, a historic women's collegiate church in Lower Saxony, is the only one of its kind still existing in the European Union. Located in Diepholz, Germany, it is a significant cultural monument with a rich history dating back to the 9th century.
History+
The collegiate church was founded around 846 by the noblewoman Liutgart, who used her paternal inheritance for this purpose. Originally conceived as a collegiate church for canonesses according to the Aachen Rule of 816, it offered noble daughters an opportunity for education and provision. Archbishop Ansgar of Hamburg and Bremen consecrated the institution, whose first abbess was Liutgart. In the 12th or 13th century, the collegiate church adopted the Benedictine Rule. Since 1541, it has been Protestant. The collegiate church, bearing the patronages of Mauritius, Maria, and Victor, continues to exist today and is still led by an abbess.

The current abbey, a half-timbered building from 1754, is open for visits and houses art-historically valuable objects. These include the chapter house with hand-painted wall hangings from 1781 and a canon's room with ceiling paintings. Former canonesses' houses are grouped around the collegiate church courtyard. The associated Collegiate Church of St. Mauritius and St. Victor is a brick church from the 13th century. The collegiate church remains active, with most of the ten capitulars living in their hometowns and meeting annually for chapter sessions.
