Kanonissenstift Essen-Rellinghausen

The origins of the Canonesses' Collegiate Church of Essen-Rellinghausen date back to the early 12th century. In 1101, the foundation stone for this spiritual institution was laid, which for centuries played an important role in the religious and cultural life of the surrounding area. As a collegiate church for canonesses, it housed a community of women who lived according to specific monastic rules, yet often, in contrast to nunneries, were less strictly cloistered and permitted to hold worldly possessions.

This historical edifice is located within the city limits of Essen, a major city in the Ruhr area of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. Its precise positioning in the Rellinghausen district integrates it into an urban environment with a historical core.

Today, the complex of the former Canonesses' Collegiate Church bears witness to its long history.
