The origins of the Canonesses' Collegiate Church of Langenhorst date back to the year 1178, when it was founded and subsequently served as a spiritual center. For centuries, the collegiate church shaped the religious and cultural life of its surroundings. It was dedicated to Saint Mary and John the Baptist. Its existence as a monastery finally ended in 1811 with its dissolution and secularization.
