Niedermünster

The origins of Niedermünster Abbey can be traced back to a foundation by Duke Tassilo III. before the year 788. It was established in the northeastern area of the former Roman legionary camp Castra Regina, where a ducal residence already existed. An initial episcopal church was built here over Roman secular buildings and housed the tomb of Saint Erhard. Around 800, a larger collegiate church was erected for the women's collegiate church. Under Duke Henry I and his wife Judith, a second women's collegiate church was constructed between 922 and 955, which Judith completed after her husband's death. She herself entered the collegiate church in 973 and led it as abbess until her death in 987, which is why she is considered its true founder. In 1002, the collegiate church was elevated to an Imperial Abbey by Henry II. In the 11th century, it experienced a period of cultural flourishing.

The Canoness Collegiate Church of Niedermünster is located in the historic old town of Regensburg, in the state of Bavaria, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 344 meters above sea level.

Today, the Canoness Collegiate Church of Niedermünster is protected as a historical monument in Bavaria and exemplifies Romanesque architecture. The archaeological findings in the church's basement, including the ancient sarcophagus of Saint Erhard and Roman foundations, are made accessible in the “document niedermünster”.
