Stift Wetter

The foundation of the Wetter collegiate church is dated to the early 11th century, based on archaeological findings and local traditions. A Romanesque crypt and remnants of an earlier building, discovered during excavations, indicate construction between 1000 and 1050. Although the exact founding history and internal development of the collegiate church are only fragmentarily traceable due to scarce sources, it was long a point of contention between the Archbishopric of Mainz and the Landgraves of Hesse. In the 15th century, the Landgraves prevailed. Following the Reformation around 1526/27, the canonesses' collegiate church was dissolved. However, a school affiliated with the collegiate church continued to exist beyond the Reformation. The former complex included, in addition to the collegiate church, a residence for priests, the Vierherrenhof, an early mass church, and other residential and economic buildings.

The Canonesses' Collegiate Church is located in the Hessian small town of Wetter, in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district, Germany. It is situated on the elevated Klosterberg and shapes the town's appearance.

The early Gothic church of the former collegiate church now serves as the Lutheran parish church for the parish of Wetter, which includes the villages of Wetter, Niederwetter, and Todenhausen.
