Kapuziner Abbey

The monastery was founded in 1630 by Philipp Adolf von Ehrenberg, Bishop of Würzburg, with the cornerstone for the monastery buildings laid in 1631. During the Thirty Years' War, the Capuchins had to leave Kitzingen and could only return in 1649. The consecration of the simple church, typical of a mendicant order, took place in 1652. The monastery was secularized in 1826 and officially dissolved in 1828. From 1831 to 1902, the buildings served as a hospital. After World War II, the Protestant community temporarily used the church for services as the town church had been damaged. In 1983, most of the former monastery buildings were demolished and replaced by a senior citizens' home, with only the church and part of the west wall remaining. Today, the church serves the Catholic parish of St. Johannes as a filial church and is regularly open for services.

The former monastery church is now a filial church of the Catholic parish of St. Johannes and is used for regular services. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and Saint Francis Seraphicus. The church is a simple hall building with a recessed rectangular choir and a small roof turret. Inside, the 17th-century furnishings are impressive, including the high altar, the side altars, and large baroque Stations of the Cross. The high altar painting depicting the Assumption of Mary was created in 1679 by Oswald Onghers. A weathered Gothic wayside shrine is located in the church's vestibule. Outside of service times, the church is generally only accessible by appointment.
