Kapuzinerkloster Breisach

Efforts to found a Capuchin monastery in Breisach began as early as 1607. A decisive initiative came in 1624 from Leopold V, the regent of Further Austria, who covered the construction costs. The foundation stone was laid on April 24, 1624, and the monastery church was consecrated on October 24, 1627. An altarpiece by the Italian painter Guido Reni, created between 1626 and 1628, adorned the high altar but has been lost since 1793. During the siege of Breisach in 1638, Capuchins documented the suffering of the population. In 1668, the Further Austrian monasteries, including Breisach, separated from the Swiss Capuchin Province and established their own province. Following the canonization of Fidelis of Sigmaringen in 1746, a Fidelis chapel was added to the church or an existing chapel was rededicated; an altarpiece depicting the saint's martyrdom is now preserved in the Breisach City History Museum. Emperor Joseph II dissolved the monastery in 1785, one of the first in Further Austria. Severely damaged by bombardment in 1793, the remains of the monastery were largely demolished in 1825. Today, only remnants of the crypt and some wall fragments, along with the street name Kapuzinergasse, serve as reminders of the former site.

The former Capuchin Monastery was situated in the city of Breisach am Rhein, a municipality in the Breisgau Hochschwarzwald district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its precise location within the city walls is now marked by Kapuzinergasse.

Today, only a portion of the crypt and some wall remnants of the Capuchin Monastery of Breisach remain. The area of the former monastery is now built over, with Kapuzinergasse serving as a reminder of the historic site.
