Event venue

The Capuchin Monastery Deggendorf, a former Capuchin monastery, is located in the Lower Bavarian city of Deggendorf. It is protected as a historical monument in Bavaria and is notable for its historical significance and the current use of a part of the former monastery church as an event venue.

History+

The monastery in Deggendorf was founded in 1625, as the Capuchin order expanded in Bavaria during the Counter-Reformation. After a four-year construction period, the complex was consecrated to the Archangel Michael in 1629. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the convent housed up to thirty order members who dedicated themselves to pilgrimage pastoral care and nursing. Spiritual theater and passion plays were also promoted by the Capuchins in Deggendorf. The care of the numerous pilgrims of the Deggendorfer Gnad led to an excellent reputation for the monastery, which temporarily served as a novitiate and study seminary. In 1802, the monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization. The convent buildings were auctioned off and largely demolished; only the nave of the monastery church remained.

Location+

The former Capuchin monastery is situated in the city of Deggendorf in the Free State of Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 319 meters above sea level.

On site+

Of the original monastery buildings, which once included 37 cells, gardens, stables, and other outbuildings, nothing remains today. However, the nave of the former monastery church still stands and is used as a multifunctional event space under the name Kapuzinerstadl.
