Kapuzinerkloster Dieburg

After the Peace of Westphalia, the Mainz Elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn gifted a monastery in Dieburg to the Capuchins, which, however, became uninhabitable in 1692. Consequently, the order established a new convent in the suburb near the pilgrimage church, known for its wine and hop cultivation. This convent was dissolved without compensation after the Peace of Lunéville. The monastery housed a Latin school, offered general school education, and theological studies. It also served repeatedly as a lazaretto, for example in 1794 during the First Coalition War and in 1813 during the Wars of Liberation. In 1822, the last brothers had to leave the monastery as the buildings were converted into a prison. In 1860, the order re-established a convent at the invitation of Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler. A new monastery church, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was built by 1868 on the site of the former Wolfenstetter estate, made possible by the purchase by Canon Christoph Moufang. From 2006 to 2009, the monastery served as a center for vocational pastoral care for the Rhenish-Westphalian provincial administration of the order. On November 25, 2012, the Capuchins bid farewell to Dieburg due to a lack of new recruits, meaning the order no longer maintains any establishments in the Diocese of Mainz.

The Capuchin Monastery is situated in Dieburg, a town in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district of Hesse, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 144 m above sea level.

Since August 2018, Russian Orthodox services of the St. Luka community have been held on Sundays in the former monastery church.
