Kapuzinerkloster Langenargen

The Capuchin Monastery in Langenargen was founded in 1694 at the instigation of the House of Montfort. Between 1696 and 1697, the monastery church of St. Anthony was constructed, consecrated in 1699 by Konrad Ferdinand Geist von Wildegg, Auxiliary Bishop of Constance. The entire complex was completed in 1701. During its existence, the monastery typically housed eleven to twelve priests, two to three lay brothers, and one scholastic. In 1811, King Frederick of Württemberg secularized the monastery. The remaining Capuchins were relocated to Wangen, and the inventory, including a valuable high altar painting featuring the oldest depiction of Tettnang, was auctioned off. Following its sale, most of the monastery was demolished, with only the convent building and surrounding walls preserved. The convent was utilized as a brewery until 1871 and subsequently as an inn.

The former Capuchin Monastery is situated in Langenargen in the Bodenseekreis, a region in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The preserved convent building came into the possession of the Elisabethenverein in 1915, which established a pre-school and women's vocational school there. From 1927, rooms were leased to the Catholic elementary school. Since 1981, following the departure of the last Franciscans, a successor organization to the Elisabethenverein, in collaboration with the Catholic parish of St. Martinus and the municipality of Langenargen, operates the St. Martin social welfare station and the Catholic kindergarten “St. Elisabeth” in the listed building.
