Kapuzinerkloster Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz

The arrival of the Capuchins in Neumarkt in 1627 marked the beginning of their pastoral work as part of the re-Catholicization of the Upper Palatinate after the Thirty Years' War. Initially housed in Neumarkt Castle, they later moved into a house next to the court church. Conflicts with the Jesuits led to their departure in 1629. During the Swedish occupation in 1633, the Capuchins even took over the care of the town church but had to leave the town briefly in 1634 before returning. The foundation stone for the actual monastery building was laid in 1674, using stones from the Wolfstein castle ruins. The associated monastery church, consecrated to Saint Anthony of Padua in 1677, was built between 1674 and 1677. The work of the Capuchins extended to surrounding areas, where they founded hospices to care for the Catholic population. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1802, and the buildings were sold or used for other purposes. The church temporarily served as a barn before being acquired by the Protestant community from 1855 onwards and used again for services as the Christuskirche. The brewing tradition of the monastery continued as Klosterbrauerei Seitz until World War II.

The former Capuchin Monastery is located in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, a town in Bavaria, Germany. The complex is situated at an elevation of approximately 428 meters above sea level and is part of the Diocese of Eichstätt.

Today, parts of the former monastery complex are preserved and used for residential or commercial purposes. Following archaeological excavations and extensive renovation and redesign work, which began in 2014 and were completed in 2016, the monastery courtyard and the deanery center are presented in a restored condition. The former monastery church now serves as the Protestant Christuskirche.
