Retirement home, cloister and church preserved

The former Capuchin Monastery in Ochsenfurt, located in Würzburg, Bavaria, represents a historical ensemble whose origins date back to the 17th century. Although the majority of the monastic complex had to make way in the 20th century, parts such as the cloister and the church have been preserved to this day, bearing witness to the site's former significance.

History+

Efforts to establish a monastery in Ochsenfurt began as early as 1644 by Fathers Hieronymus and Kasimir von Haslang. Two years later, in 1646, an official request was made by the city to the Capuchin General Pater Innocentius in Munich. Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn granted permission for construction to begin in 1664. The Capuchin church was consecrated on October 16, 1667, in honor of Saints Burkard and Anthony. Eighteen ordained priests and brothers provided pastoral care in Ochsenfurt and the surrounding region. During the secularization of 1803, the monastery initially remained in existence. However, despite the population's resistance, King Ludwig I of Bavaria decreed its dissolution in 1826 and 1828. The city of Ochsenfurt acquired the monastery properties in 1829 and used them from 1835 to house beneficiaries of the local hospital. In 1973, the majority of the monastery was demolished to make way for the Haus Franziskus senior citizens' home.
