Kapuzinerkloster Stühlingen

The Capuchin Monastery of Stühlingen, a former Capuchin settlement, is located in the Waldshut district of Baden-Württemberg. It is known for its historic Loreto Chapel, which was modeled after the Holy House in Loreto, Italy, and laid the foundation for the later monastery.
History+
The origins of the monastery date back to the late 17th century. Landgrave Maximilian Franz von Fürstenberg-Stühlingen had a chapel built in 1679 after recovering from an illness during a trip to Italy. This Loreto Chapel was consecrated in 1681 and quickly developed into an important pilgrimage site due to the growing number of pilgrims. In 1737, the Capuchins were permitted to found a monastery in Stühlingen, and construction of the convent building began in 1743. The monastery, dedicated to Maria Loreto, was dissolved in 1802 during secularization and finally ceased to exist with the death of the last friar in 1831. After its dissolution, it served temporarily as a school and later as a hospital. In 1927, the monastery was revived as a Capuchin novitiate and trained numerous novices until World War II. In recent decades, it was run as a “monastery for living with,” before it was finally closed in 2022 due to staff shortages and financial constraints. Since 2025, the site has housed the Stühlingen town hall.
