Kapuzinerkloster Überlingen

The Swiss Capuchin Province began expanding its presence on Lake Constance around 1600. In 1613, Überlingen was considered as a site for a new foundation, a proposal welcomed by the city magistrate. The city provided a building plot outside the western city wall, and the foundation stone was laid in April 1619. Construction, primarily funded by donations, was completed in 1621, and the monastery church was consecrated on September 8 of that year. During the siege of Überlingen in the Thirty Years' War in 1634, the monastery served as a base for the besiegers and was subsequently demolished for security reasons after their withdrawal. The friars found temporary accommodation within the city. In 1640, the monastery was reconsecrated at its old location but was demolished again three years later due to the threat of renewed occupation by enemy troops. After the Peace of Westphalia, the city council decided in 1651 on a new construction within the city walls, at Steckenmarkt. The foundation stone was laid in 1654, and the third monastic complex, a Baroque hall church with a monastery garden, was consecrated in 1658. The monastery enjoyed considerable popularity until its secularization. In 1751, a Chapel of St. Fidelis was added. As part of the secularization process in the early 19th century, the monastery was dissolved in 1806. The remaining friars moved to the dissolved Franciscan monastery.

The former Capuchin Monastery is situated in Überlingen in the Bodenseekreis district, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 403 m above sea level.

Today, only the deconsecrated and heavily altered monastery church remains from the former convent buildings.
