Kapuzinerkloster Waldshut

The foundation stone for the Capuchin Monastery in Waldshut was laid in 1654. Its establishment was part of a comprehensive initiative to create Capuchin monasteries throughout Further Austria, which began after Leopold V's accession to the throne and continued under his son Ferdinand Karl. The aim was to strengthen the Habsburg corridor, surrounded by Protestant territories, both confessionally and ideologically. Planning for the monastery dates back to 1650, and the site was handed over to the Capuchins in 1652. Under the supervision of the Prince-Bishop of Basel, Johann Franz von Schönau, the Swiss Capuchin Province took charge of the planning and construction. The order's master builder, Probus Heine, was responsible for the construction. Important patrons included Franz Ludwig von Roll and his wife Maria Agnes, as well as Prince-Abbot Franz I. Chullot and Landgrave Johann Ludwig II. von Sulz. The solemn consecration of the convent church took place on September 7, 1659, performed by the Bishop of Constance, Franz Johann Vogt von Altensumerau und Prasberg. The monastery was dissolved in 1821.

After its dissolution in 1821, the building complex underwent several complete renovations. From 1859 onwards, it was utilized by the Waldshut Hospital Fund, which evolved into the later hospital and current Klinikum Hochrhein.
