Carmel Holy Blood

The Carmel Heilig Blut in Dachau, Bavaria, is a contemplative monastery of the Discalced Carmelites, distinguished by its unique location directly adjacent to the grounds of a former concentration camp. It serves as a place of atonement and reconciliation.
History+
The foundation of the monastery dates back to an initiative from 1656, with the current complex of the Discalced Carmelites being established in 1964. The idea to create a contemplative monastery at this historically significant site originated from Sr. Maria-Theresia von der gekreuzigten Liebe from the Carmel St. Joseph in Bonn-Pützchen. She saw it as an opportunity to counter violence and horror with a place of prayer and peace. The project was supported by several cardinals, including Joseph Frings, Hermann Volk, and Julius Döpfner, as well as Auxiliary Bishop Johannes Neuhäusler. The first mass was celebrated on July 1, 1964, and the church was consecrated on November 22 of the same year. The monastery is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
