Karmel Sankt Joseph

The monastery's origins date back to the 17th century, when the Adelheidis spring in Pützchen became a pilgrimage destination after the relics of Saint Adelheid were lost during the Thirty Years' War. A chapel erected at the spring was initially cared for by hermits from 1679. In 1688, Count Palatine Johann Wilhelm of Palatinate-Neuburg transferred the pilgrimage chapel to the Discalced Carmelites. Between 1703 and 1706, a convent was established here, later expanded to include the Church of St. Adelheid. During the wars of the 1790s, the monastery served as a military hospital. As part of the secularization, the monastery was dissolved on September 12, 1803, and the Carmelites were expelled in 1804. The entrepreneur Leopold Bleibtreu acquired the property in 1825 and used it for coal mining and alum production. From 1847 to 1863, it served the Prussian state as a correctional institution. From 1866, the former monastery housed Dr. Besser's Private Asylum, later known as Dr. Gudden's Sanatorium. A fire in the 1880s severely damaged the complex, but it was rebuilt by 1890. In 1920, the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus acquired the monastery and founded the St. Adelheid Gymnasium there, which moved to a new building in 1925. In 1926, the monastery was sold to the Discalced Carmelites from Cologne, who founded the Carmel St. Joseph. In 1941, the Gestapo dissolved the monastery and used it as a reserve military hospital. After the war, the Carmelites returned and founded further Carmelite monasteries from this location. In 1998, the Carmelites sold the monastery and moved to Dorsten-Lembeck, as the building had become too large for the convent.

The former Carmel St. Joseph monastery is situated in Bonn, in the Pützchen-Bechlinghoven district, within the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany.

The historic convent building is now part of a communal living project, combining the old building substance with new constructions on the site. Construction began in 1998, and in 2000, the association "Gemeinsames Wohnen Karmelkloster e.V." was founded.
