Kapelle St. Joseph

The origins of the Carmelite Monastery of St. Joseph lie in a new foundation established in the 1850s. It continued the legacy of the earlier Carmelite Monastery of Maria vom Frieden, which had been established in Cologne in 1639 but dissolved in 1802 during secularization. After lengthy efforts by Cologne's citizenry, the re-establishment of the order was successful in 1850. Three sisters from a Liège convent formed the nucleus of the new community, which quickly grew to fourteen cloistered sisters, two novices, and three external sisters. Initially housed in the deanery of St. Kunibert, the sisters acquired a plot of land near the Gereonskloster in 1851. There, the Cologne architect Vincenz Statz erected a new convent building, which was occupied in 1853 and placed under the patronage of Saint Joseph. In 1863, a chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph, built in neo-Gothic style from reddish-brown brick, was consecrated. The existence of the Carmelite Monastery of St. Joseph in Cologne ended as early as 1875. Due to the anti-clerical policies of the Prussian government during the Kulturkampf, the sisters moved to the Netherlands. The Cologne complex was subsequently converted into a girls' home, but the chapel remained in use for services. Only in 1896 did some Carmelites return to Cologne and found the Carmelite Monastery of Maria vom Frieden in the Lindenthal district.

The former Carmelite Monastery of St. Joseph was located in Cologne, a major city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The site is situated at an elevation of approximately 56 meters above sea level.

The former chapel of the Carmelite Monastery of St. Joseph is preserved today as a remnant without its original facade. It has been integrated into the buildings of a former corporate headquarters in the Friesenviertel district. The interior of the chapel, surrounded by a paved courtyard, is accessible from a side wing.
