Karmelitenkirche

The origins of the Carmelite Church date back to 1620, when Elector Maximilian I made a vow after a military victory. Ten years later, he invited Discalced Carmelites to Munich. However, the construction of a monastery was delayed by the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War. It was not until 1654 that the monastery complex could be built according to plans by Hans Konrad Asper. In the course of this, the original Nikolauskirche was demolished and replaced in 1660 by a new building by Marx Schinnagl, which was also consecrated to Saint Nicholas. Between 1802 and 1811, the facade underwent a classical redesign by Nikolaus Schedel von Greiffenstein. After severe damage in World War II, a simplified reconstruction by Sep Ruf took place from 1955 to 1957, with only the facade and choir apse being reconstructed.

The Carmelite Church is situated in the Kreuzviertel of Munich's historic Old Town, at the junction of Karmeliterstraße and Promenadeplatz. It is located in Bavaria, Germany.

The reconstructed building of the former Carmelite Church now houses the archive of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and the library of the Metropolitan Chapter in its western part. The eastern part accommodates an event hall, and an exhibition space is located in the nave. An organ by Zeilhuber from 1965 is also present. In the former sacristy, frescoes by Johann Anton Gumpp and stucco by Francesco Marazzzo were uncovered in 1981.
