Carmelite Monastery

The foundation of the Carmelite convent in Boppard is dated to 1254, although documentary evidence only exists from 1262. In that year, the monastery's benefactors received a papal indulgence, and in 1264, Archbishop Heinrich II von Finstingen of Trier granted permission to acquire land and build a monastery. The complex was built west of the Roman city center, directly at a former city gate. The monastery church was probably at least partially completed and consecrated around 1279. The monastery received considerable support from the urban nobility and bourgeoisie, which was reflected in numerous foundations and donations, including an extensive vineyard. Between 1728 and 1730, most of the dilapidated buildings were replaced by a simple Baroque structure, grouped around a square courtyard with a cloister. In 1802, the convent was dissolved by Napoleon as part of the secularization. The valuable library and the monastery's archive were largely destroyed in the process.

The Carmelite Monastery is located in Boppard, a city in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It lies west of the historic city center, which was already walled in Roman times.

After the monastery's dissolution in 1802, the building served as a Latin school for the Franciscans from 1805, which was later expanded into a Progymnasium. Until 1952, the complex was used, partly with interruptions, as a school building. Subsequently, it housed offices and apartments. Since 1976, the listed building has been used by the Boppard city administration, but is currently vacant due to ongoing renovation work.
