Karmelitenkloster St. Josef (Regensburg)

The history of the Carmelites in Regensburg began around 1290 with a convent, which, however, left the city after about 80 years. Almost three centuries later, in 1634, Emperor Ferdinand II called Discalced Carmelites to Regensburg. They were the fourth order to arrive in the city as part of the Counter-Reformation. Initially, two order representatives temporarily occupied premises of the Johanniterkommende St. Leonhard. The acquisition of land at today's Bismarckplatz for a monastery building was prevented in 1640 by the predominantly Protestant imperial city. A year later, in 1641, however, the former episcopal courts of Bamberg and Freising, as well as the inn 'Zum Weißen Lamm' at the Alter Kornmarkt, could be acquired, an action strongly supported by the Catholic imperial house. The laying of the foundation stone for the monastery building took place in October 1641 in the presence of Emperor Ferdinand III and his consort. Despite considerable financial challenges requiring numerous donations, the monastery building was completed in 1655. From 1660, a high Baroque monastery church was built, completed in 1673 and consecrated in 1672. The convent grew in the 18th century due to pastoral duties and selfless work in nursing, especially during the plague epidemic of 1713. The development of the Carmelite spirit around 1720 significantly improved the monastery's economic situation. During the secularization at the beginning of the 19th century, the monastery was dissolved in 1812, but two friars remained on site and continued the production of the Carmelite spirit. In 1836, the monastery was revived and has existed continuously ever since.
