The Carmelite Monastery Maria in der Not in Essen is a place of contemplation and prayer. It houses a convent of Discalced Carmelites and is known for its peaceful atmosphere amidst the North Rhine-Westphalian landscape.
History+
The foundation of the monastery dates back to the wish of the Bishop of Essen, Franz Hengsbach. In 1961, the cornerstone was laid for the new monastery. It was established by Carmelite nuns from the Cologne Carmel Maria vom Frieden and located in Essen-Stoppenberg, near the collegiate church Maria in der Not and St. Nicholas Church. The historical convent buildings of the former Stoppenberg Abbey, which had already been dissolved in 1803, were converted for the new use. In 1964, the first sisters were able to move into the gatehouse, and on April 11, 1965, the monastery was solemnly consecrated by Bishop Hengsbach.
