Kartause Erfurt

The origins of the monastery date back to 1372, when construction began. By 1374, the community was incorporated into the Carthusian Order, and the church was consecrated in 1375. Initially home to fourteen monks and six lay brothers, the community grew rapidly and received numerous endowments. The Erfurt Carthusian Monastery was so successful that it supported the founding of other monasteries in Eisenach (1383) and Hildesheim (1387). In the 14th and 15th centuries, the monastery experienced its heyday, hosting significant scholars such as Johannes Indaginis and Jakobus de Clusa. Despite the Reformation, which had less impact on the convent, the number of monks declined in the 16th century, leading to a refoundation under Prior Jodokus Heß. During the Thirty Years' War, the convent was expelled, and over the centuries, valuable church treasures were lost. Between 1702 and 1728, extensive Baroque renovations and new constructions were carried out under Priors Ambrosius Kummer and Leopold Wohlgemut. With the secularization in 1803, the monastery was dissolved and transferred to private ownership in 1805, before a fire in 1845 largely destroyed the complex. The extensive monastery library was transferred to the University of Erfurt in 1810.

The Carthusian Monastery is located in the city of Erfurt, the state capital of Thuringia in Germany. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 201 meters above sea level.

Of the once large monastic complex, primarily the church with adjoining buildings remains today. After a varied history and a fire in the 19th century, the complex underwent extensive renovation in the 21st century. The Baroque facade has been meticulously restored, and the former church now houses exceptional apartments. A section of the church roof has been replaced with a glass surface to create a light-filled atrium, incorporating the historically protected sacristy.
