Nuremberg Charterhouse

The monastery was founded in 1380 by the merchant Marquard Mendel, who endowed the complex to the Carthusian Order. The laying of the foundation stone for the monastery church took place on February 16, 1381, an event celebrated in the presence of King Wenceslaus of Bohemia and the papal legate Cardinal Pileus. The first monks settled there as early as 1382, and the church was probably consecrated in 1383 or 1387. The founder, Marquard Mendel, found his final resting place in the church's choir in 1385. Construction work on the monastery continued until the mid-15th century and included the sacristy, the cloister with monks' cells, and communal and economic buildings. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1525 and subsequently used for secular purposes. From 1625, the church temporarily served religious services again, initially Protestant and from 1784 temporarily Catholic. In 1857, the severely damaged complex was handed over to the Germanisches Museum.

The Carthusian Monastery is located in the city of Nuremberg in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 315 meters above sea level.

The remains of the monastery are now integrated into the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. Some architectural remnants of the Carthusian complex, including parts of the vaulted cloisters and monks' houses, are preserved or have been rebuilt.
