Kloster Karthaus

The original monastery of St. Alban was founded in 1331 by Archbishop Balduin of Trier. It was situated at the foot of the Heiligkreuzberg, just outside the gates of Trier. In the 15th century, the Carthusian monks Adolf von Essen and Dominikus von Preußen worked here, making significant contributions to the spread of the modern form of the Rosary prayer. During the Reunification Wars, the monastery was demolished in 1674 on the orders of the French commander Pierre Comte de Vignory, to prevent enemy troops from finding cover. Between 1680 and 1730, the Carthusian monastery, now named St. Bruno, was built at a new location in what was then Merzlich, following plans by the Mainz master builder Vitus Schneider. After its dissolution during the French Revolution and auction in 1804, Franciscan nuns acquired the ruins in 1855 and established a new monastery there. Following a fire in 1884, the monastery was rebuilt between 1885 and 1887, adhering to the Baroque plans. Further renovations took place in 1903, 1963, and 1987.

The monastery is located in Konz-Karthaus, a village on the Moselle river in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Originally, it was situated just outside the city gates of Trier.

Today, the associated church of St. Johann serves as the Catholic parish church of Konz-Karthaus. The monastery buildings are used as a community center and cultural hub for the town of Konz. The complex's gymnasium is available for school sports to St. Johann Konz primary school and to the Tischtennisfreunde (TTF) Konz club. Of the original furnishings, the high altar from 1720 and a side altar from the mid-18th century have been preserved.
