Aggsbach Charterhouse

The Carthusian Monastery of Aggsbach was founded in 1380 by Heidenreich von Maissau. Between 1387 and 1391, Michael von Prag led the monastery as prior. The monastery acquired extensive property and, by the 18th century, owned numerous lordships in Lower Austria, including Purgstall and Großmugl. In 1723, its possessions totaled twelve such lordships. Emperor Joseph II dissolved the monastery in 1782 and had it converted into a castle. Parts of the monastery were integrated into the rectory, while the Carthusian cells and the large cloister were demolished.
