Gaming Charterhouse

The foundation of the Gaming Charterhouse in 1330 can be attributed to Duke Albrecht II, who fulfilled a vow he and his brother Leopold made before the Battle of Mühldorf in 1322. Although a different location was initially planned, Albrecht chose Gaming after Leopold's death. The selection of this site was strategically significant, as the monastery was also intended to serve as a ducal burial place, a departure from the traditional Habsburg family burial site in Königsfelden. This move set a territorial-political accent to strengthen regional rule. The establishment of the monastery, named “Marienthron,” was carefully prepared, possibly influenced by Prior Gottfried of the Mauerbach Charterhouse. Monks from Mauerbach were to form the new community. From its inception, the Gaming Charterhouse was designed for a larger community of 24 monks and a prior, in contrast to the usual size of twelve monks.
